Balanga David
Balanga David (Bala) is a professional dancer in Walukuba, Jinja, Uganda. He has been a participant for seven years on numerous projects led by a research team who have used applied theatre to train members of the community in facilitation and artistic practice to create social change.
Bala performed as part of a 25-member ensemble in Wano Waife (But This Land is Ours) which told research stories from the Communication and Creativity project. The stories were performed to a total of 1,200 audience members over four nights with shows in Walukuba, Jinja, and the National Theatre in Kampala.
In this film, Bala talks about how the project has enabled him to give back to his community, gaining new skills and contributing to his career. Dr Matthew Elliott (Principal Investigator, University of Leeds) and Dr Lillian Mbabazi (Co-Investigator, Makerere University) provide an overview of the project and outline some of its broader impacts on the Walukuba community.
