Teacher training

Classroom activity

In addition to research and weekly community activities in Kenya, the project has also provided capacity building opportunities for school partners in Nyando sub-county.

The project aimed to see how arts-based approaches can be embedded holistically across communities and not be isolated to community provision alone. The teacher training work package is the project’s attempt at reaching this aim.

Given our continued collaboration with school partners and a tendency for schooling to be dominated by rote teaching approaches, a set of teachers from partner schools were invited to take part in a three-day intensive training course in arts-based approaches to explore how creativity can be practiced within the curriculum.

Alongside the training was a discussion on widespread practices of corporal punishment with Kenyan schooling and how can more inclusive forms of teaching ensure a safer classroom for students.

This strand of the work was overseen by Dr Simon Peter Otieno with support from Equator Ensemble. The training took place in June 2025.
