Phase 3: Bringing communities together

For the final phase of the work in the UK, all three community groups come together for an intensive five-day artistic residency in the Workshop Theatre at the University of Leeds in July 2026.
The aim of this residency was to use art and creativity to critically discuss commonalities and shared ideas of communication across the three separate community groups.
The work was led by a creative team put together by Mafwa and the research team of Dr Matthew Elliott and Dr Kirrily Pells.
The residency utilised a range of arts-based practices to develop a new piece of performance to ask questions about cross-community communication. Bringing together music, movement, theatre and moments of interaction, In Other Words was shared with invited audiences in the Workshop Theatre on 24 and 25 July.
